LIU Course Based Model
Long Island University’s Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment created a personal finance course entitled “Game-Changing Finance”, a three-credit class that has a required component of individualized financial coaching. The foundation of the course is a personal finance curriculum developed in partnership with JPMorganChase. The course has become popular with students in the Roc Nation school, as well as undergraduate students across the campus. In the first year of the MSFCP™, LIU served over 50 students, many of whom were first in their families to attend college, and others were completing degrees as nontraditional students. Students taking the course cited significant improvement in their financial knowledge and ability to manage financial decisions.
LIU Innovative Practices
Instruction in the course is a team effort, with the instructor teaching the course, in coordination with JPMorganChase Community Managers as guest speakers participating in a few of the class sessions. The JPMorganChase Community Managers provide input that is especially valuable, as they share their real-life experiences as financial professionals. The coaching is also done primarily by the faculty member, which means that the personal finance content is reinforced during the one-on-one coaching sessions.
Progress to Date
For the 2025 Fall Semester, LIU enrolled 13 students. 13 passed the course and participated in at least two financial coaching sessions for a completion rate of 100%. Other milestones include:
- 100% of the students participated in 3+ coaching sessions
- 100% created a budget
- 85% achieved a financial goal
- 15% increased their credit score while participating in MSFCP with an average increase of 25 points
