LIU Success To Date
The Money Smart Financial Coaching Program is offered through the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment, which was started in 2021, in partnership with the global entertainment company, Roc Nation. The school offers majors such as music technology, sports management, and marketing. The MSFCP serves not only students in the Roc Nation school, but also students across the campus. In the first year of the MSFCP, LIU served over 50 students with over 60% of participants having at least 3 meetings. Many students in the program were first in their families to attend college, and others were completing degrees as nontraditional students. Many coaching students also participated in the “Game-Changing Finance” course described below.
LIU Innovative Practices
In 2023, LIU launched a new personal finance course entitled “Game-Changing Finance,” which was open to all undergraduates. This course was unique, in that it allowed students the chance to participate in one-on-one financial coaching through the MSFCP. Integrated into the course was a personal finance curriculum developed in partnership with JPMorgan Chase and delivered by JPMorgan Chase Community Managers, who are responsible for interfacing with the community to provide financial education. Students taking the course cited significant improvement in their financial knowledge and ability to manage financial decisions.
